EMBO issues recommendations on stem cell research and policy

27-Nov-2006

The European molecular biology Organization (EMBO) has issued scientific recommendations for stem cell research and policy-making, formulated in consultation with a group of leading stem cell scientists. The ten recommendations detail actions that the 15 specialists from basic research, industry and patient advocacy believe to be crucial for stem cell research to fulfil "its potential for advancing healthcare, the biological sciences and the economy in Europe".

Andrew Moore, Manager of the EMBO Science & Society Programme and co-ordinator of the project, commented: "Europe has a long way to go to bridge its divisions and develop stem cell research and infrastructures in ways that fully benefit science, healthcare and the economy. Strong scientific input to policy-making, co-ordinated at the European level, is vital to the future of the field."

The recommendations form part of a more detailed publication providing an introduction to stem cell biology and featuring articles by the above scientists on various aspects of stem cell research.
