Market for Catalog Antibodies Continues Strong Growth

01-Jun-2006

According to the findings of a new study, the average growth rate for pre-made catalog antibodies is projected to be 10.5% over the next 12 months. Specific geographic and market segments are projected to have even higher rates of growth. bioinformatics, LLC recently surveyed 1,000 life scientists who use catalog antibodies in their research. The results are presented in a new report "The Market for Antibodies: Keys to Success for Commercial Suppliers, Volume II".

The market for antibodies is highly fragmented, with no clear market leader. The two market share leaders, Santa Cruz Biotechnology and Sigma-Aldrich, have a combined market share (in terms of relative expenditure) of less than 25% of the total market. "Unlike most other life science markets, the pre-made antibody market consists of a very large number -- over 325 -- of well-established competitors and start-up companies, which strive to gain or maintain market share. This dynamic mix of suppliers is often overwhelming to some scientists, though some scientists appreciate this variety," noted Dr. Tamara Zemlo, Director of Syndicated Research at BioInformatics.

Looking at the suppliers who provide the best overall experience in terms of product quality and customer service, the market is even more competitive. Five companies actually tied for the top ranking of preferred supplier: BD Biosciences Pharmingen (a division of Becton Dickinson & Co.), Cell Signaling Technology, Sigma-Aldrich, Santa Cruz Biotechnology, and Molecular Probes (a division of Invitrogen).

The report, which includes hundreds of comments from customers, examines the market in terms of market share, growth and customer segmentation. Each of the market's 10 leading suppliers are also profiled in detail, including an analysis of their customers' profitability, satisfaction, loyalty, and overall brand strength. "Integrating these metrics into a company's marketing portfolio requires adopting a real market-based, customer-focused viewpoint. Though a challenging marketing task, it can ultimately help secure a supplier's customer base by establishing a market position that one's competitors will find hard to duplicate," stated Dr. Zemlo.
