Brazilian Regulatory Body Approves Monsanto's Insect-Protected Bollgard Cotton

22-Mar-2005

The approval of Monsanto's Bollgard cotton by Brazil's regulatory body, the National Commission for biosafety (CTNBio) was an important step in the regulatory process for this product, said Jerry Glover, Vice-President External Affairs, Monsanto Company.

"This is a positive step forward. However, commercialization of the product cannot proceed until the Minister of Agriculture registers the various varieties of cotton seed containing the Bollgard trait, and those applications must be done by companies that we can license" said Glover.

"Bollgard cotton is an effective tool for farmers to protect their crops from insects and it also reduces the amount of pesticides applications needed so it has a positive effect on the environment including cleaner water," said Glover. "We believe this product will bring many benefits to Brazilian growers in the future."
