Seamless integration into existing infrastructures with a modular plug flow reactor
Achieve up to 28 days of autonomous operation with precise flow‑through incubation
Pionic® Spin redefines downstream bioprocessing by enabling autonomous, continuous low‑pH virus inactivation. The system transforms traditional batch operations into streamlined continuous processing and supports monoclonal antibody manufacturing at clinical and commercial scales.
The system comprises four functional zones: elution peak homogenization in a 20 L mixing bag, precise acidification via a novel 3 L recirculation loop with automated pH titration, continuous virus inactivation in the proprietary serpentine incubator, and neutralization preparation for transfer to polishing steps. The plug‑flow reactor technology delivers a tight residence time distribution; the curved flow path is engineered for high Dean numbers to ensure radial mixing.
Key technical capabilities include scalable processing across multiple incubator configurations (collectively 1–22 L/h), validated ≥5 log₁₀ reduction of enveloped viruses, and extended closed, aseptic campaigns of up to 28 days using ready‑to‑use flow kits and 3D biocontainers. Residence time depends on module volume and flow; specifications indicate typical operation at >30 minutes (reference: 1 mPas, room temperature).
Advanced automation provides real‑time monitoring using BioPAT® sensors for pressure, flow, conductivity, pH, and UV. Pionic® Spin supports connectivity and orchestration via OPC UA for DCS/SCADA/MES, including data acquisition and historization as well as external control.
The modular design accommodates various incubator configurations with serpentine plate modules and per‑plate volumes (approximately 187 mL, 495 mL, 700 mL, 1,580 mL) arranged in series. By adjusting the number of plates, inner dimensions, and path length, the process window can be tailored to specific needs while maintaining consistent performance across scales.
Pionic® Spin forms the foundation of the broader Pionic® platform for downstream process intensification, supporting both the intensification of individual unit operations and fully integrated continuous workflows. The system reduces aggregation risk associated with traditional batch methods, maximizes throughput, and lowers manufacturing costs.
