Nuvisan announced it has received a US$25 million grant from the Gates Foundation to advance a portfolio of novel non-hormonal contraceptive drug discovery projects.
The new three-year grant builds on a successful program, delivered over the past three years. It is intended to further expand the pipeline of non-hormonal contraceptive candidates, an area of significant unmet need in global health.
The program will support the advancement of one lead project toward preclinical candidate nomination, the progression of additional hit-to-lead and earlier-stage projects, and the establishment of an advanced, in vitro assay platform to accelerate preclinical drug discovery in the field.
Leveraging Nuvisan’s integrated drug discovery track record and expertise in women’s health, as well as close collaborations with research teams within the Contraceptive Drug Accelerator (CoDA), the program will move forward assets and results generated during the initial funding period into the next stage of preclinical development.
Dr. Martin Lange, EVP Therapeutic Research at Nuvisan and Principal Investigator of the program said: “Non-hormonal contraception remains an important area of research with substantial unmet need. We are pleased to continue working with the Gates Foundation and its broader network to help progress multiple projects in the field of contraception.”
Dr. Charlotte Kopitz, President of Discovery Research at Nuvisan, added: “We are proud to continue this program and to contribute our drug discovery capabilities, pharmaceutical expertise and experience in women’s health to the advancement of a new generation of contraceptive medicines toward preclinical development.”
