Fertin Pharma enters collaboration with US Army Dental Research and Trauma Detachment on an Antimicrobial chewing gum

21-Dec-2006

Fertin Pharma A/S announced that a collaboration has been established with the US Army Dental Research and Trauma Detachment (USADRTD) for the development of an antimicrobial decapeptide medicinal chewing gum for the treatment and prevention of plaques, cavities, and gum diseases.

The collaboration will combine USADRTD's proprietary antimicrobial decapeptide with Fertin Pharma's know-how related to development and manufacture of medical chewing gum to create a chewing gum that will deliver a controlled release of the decapeptide in the oral cavity.

The Background for USADRTD entering this collaboration is that dental emergencies continue to threaten the readiness of deployed military forces. The majority of the dental emergencies are plaque-induced oral infections. USADRTD has developed a promising antimicrobial peptide candidate that could be used for controlling plaque-associated oral infections, including dental caries and periodontitis. The USADTRD is particularly interested in developing antimicrobial systems that could be incorporated into the military field ration, specifically into chewing gum.
