First report on 'Industrial Research & Development in Europe'

17-May-2005

Today, competition in the global economy is mostly a competition of ideas and innovation. Innovation is mainly performed by researchers and developers, many of whom are working in industry (also often defined as the business enterprise sector). The rapidly changing frameset of the R&D workplace demands a successful and rapid adaptation to global competition in R&D by developing its strength in Europe and reducing its weaknesses.

A successful adaptation can only be achieved if the framework environment in R&D attracts more innovators and provides them with working conditions where they can unfold their capacities in an optimal way. Hence, R&D investment has to match human resources and innovative project proposals, and not vice versa. Little is known about the innovators themselves and their experience and ideas about innovation.

A survey in cooperation with Euroscience was intended to fill this gap in information. This is the first study of its kind addressing all industrial R&D personnel in order to assess the situation of business enterprise R&D in all industry branches throughout Europe. The study focused on a number of relevant topics and also called for ways to overcome the existing obstacles to innovation, mainly in industrial R&D.
