Revotar announces promising results suggesting COPD as a potential target for selectin antagonist treatment in humans

20-Oct-2003

Following the recent announcement of its positive asthma allergen challenge study following treatment with its selectin antagonist bimosiamose, Revotar Biopharmaceu-ticals AG announced today the results of a clinical investigative study which were first presented at the European Respiratory Society meeting in Vienna, 30th September 2003. In this pilot study, whole blood from normal, allergic asthmatic, or subjects with COPD was analysed by flow cytometry for the expression of P-selectin glyco-protein ligand-1 (PSGL-1) on leukocytes. Revotar's selectin antagonist has been demonstrated in multiple preclinical studies, supported by recent clinical proof-of-concept studies, to strongly inhibit the interaction of leukocytes with the vessel adhesion molecules.

"The results of our clinical investigative study show that circulating leukocytes in subjects with COPD express increased levels of PSGL-1 which will allow enhanced recruitment of leukocytes to sites of chronic inflammation. Interruption of the leukocyte adhesion molecule interaction with a selectin antagonist such as bimosiamose may be of future potential therapeutic value in decreasing cell migration into the chronically inflamed lung tissue. As the next step, clinical trials in COPD patients are needed to confirm the therapeutic value of these intriguing results", stated Professor Christian Witt, principal investigator of the study and Head of the Pulmonary Division of the Charité Hospital in Berlin, Germany.

"We are very excited by these study findings which strongly suggest the potential of a selectin antagonist such as bimosiamose to expand its therapeutic application to a severe debilitating disease as COPD in the future", added Rainer N. Zahlten, M.D, Chief Scientific Officer of Revotar Biopharmaceuticals AG.
