'The Roles of Pharmacists in Managed Health Care Organizations' Available From the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy
"The Roles of Pharmacists in Managed Health Care Organizations" is now available from the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP). The document explains the many diverse roles that pharmacists fill in all the aspects of managed care pharmacy.
"With all the attention now focused on a pharmacy benefit for Medicare beneficiaries, AMCP thought the timing was right to publish this information. It will help all those who are concerned about the issue of administering a pharmacy benefit understand the many diverse areas of expertise pharmacists provide in managed care organizations," said Judith A. Cahill, executive director of AMCP. "A tremendous amount of academic, clinical, scientific and economic knowledge is required to adequately design and implement a robust pharmacy benefit," Cahill said.
There are approximately 18,000 managed care pharmacists practicing in numerous managed care environments, such as health plans, pharmacy benefit management companies and mail order service facilities. "The key difference between managed care pharmacy and other disciplines within the profession is that managed care pharmacists don't focus on only one patient, but create broad programs that are designed to address the welfare of an entire population," Cahill said. "Their concerns are focused on the structure of a pharmacy benefit plan, dynamic review processes to assess patient safety, and the assurance of quality, efficacy and affordability for clients and members."
