Merck Implements Tripos' MetaLayer Data Integration Technology After Successful Completion of Pilot Project

25-Jul-2002

ST. LOUIS, July 24 - Tripos, Inc., a leading provider of drug discovery chemistry, software and services, announced today that Merck & Co., Inc., has implemented a system based on a previously licensed Tripos MetaLayer(TM) technology to integrate chemical and biological drug discovery data and improve access to these data for Merck researchers.

The implementation follows a period of testing and successful completion of a pilot project in which Merck evaluated the utility of MetaLayer technology. Based on the results of the pilot project, Merck is moving forward with a broader implementation of a MetaLayer-based system. Merck scientists will use the new system to query, view and analyze research data without being required to reformat or re-engineer their data-gathering methodology. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

"We were able to demonstrate in the pilot project that our MetaLayer platform speeds data interpretation by making it easier to organize data by projects, enabling scientists to control how they combine the results of multiple research fields," said Dr. Trevor Heritage, senior vice president and general manager of Discovery Informatics at Tripos. "We are excited that Merck has chosen MetaLayer technology for its enterprise-wide informatics strategy."

"Merck has been a long-time, valued customer of Tripos, and its implementation of the MetaLayer platform furthers our continuing relationship," said Dr. John P. McAlister, president and chief executive officer of Tripos. "Merck recognized the value of MetaLayer technology in addressing the problem of integrating chemical and biological data and that it could realize savings through the use of this technology."
