Degussa Licenses Genedata's Integrated Bioinformatics Platform to Streamline its Metabolic Engineering Research

18-Jun-2004

Degussa AG, Feed additives Business Unit, Dusseldorf and Genedata AG, Basel announced today that Degussa has licensed Genedata's bioinformatics technology to support Degussa's metabolic engineering research and development process. The package consists of tailored editions of Phylosopher and Expressionist adapted to the needs of the biotechnology industry.

"We expect that the genomics technologies that we have recently implemented at Degussa will significantly accelerate our development cycles. Genedata's technology gives us a comprehensive solution to our ambitious bioinformatics requirements ranging from expression data analysis to functional genomics and biological knowledge databases. The underlying research management system supports all steps in our discovery and development pipeline," says Dr. Ralf Kelle, Head of Biotechnology Research and Development at Degussa Feed Additives.

"Phylosopher allows us to get the most out of our proprietary genome information. The tight integration of in-house knowledge with sequence and expression analysis facilitates the identification of metabolic bottlenecks and makes the rational improvement of production strains much more efficient," adds Dr. Brigitte Bathe, Head of Corynebacterium glutamicum strain development.

"The systematic analysis of pathway activity patterns in a cell during a production cycle gives us important indications towards directed enhancements of strains and production processes," states Dr. Mechthild Rieping, Head of Escherichia coli strain development. "Expressionist provides us with the tools to easily analyze and interpret the data of large gene expression studies, thereby helping to streamline our research efforts."

"We are very happy to expand our existing successful collaboration with Degussa, a global leader in industrial biotechnology, pioneering the integrated application of genomics and transcriptomics technology. We are uniquely suited to support this approach with our technology and experience in the modern life science industry," adds Othmar Pfannes, Ph.D., CEO of Genedata.
