Chromosome number

The chromosome number is the number of chromosomes in each cell of an organism.

Haplod and diploid chromosome number

The haploid chromosome number is the number of chromosomes in the gamete cell of an organism. Thus, in humans (sperm and egg cells), this number is 23.

The diploid chromosome number in humans is 46.

Relation to complexity

The chromosome number of a species is not directly related to its complexity. For instance, the chromosome number of the fruit fly is 4, while it's 16 in yeast, although the latter is less complex than the former.
