"Research, cure, teach" was the mission that Bernhard Nocht gave to the newly founded "Institute for Ship and Tropical Diseases" at the Port of Hamburg over 100 years ago. The motto has endured. The social mission of the "Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine" - as it is known today - is set out in the foundation's purpose: "The purpose of the foundation is to carry out research, teaching, training, further education and training as well as advice and care in the fields of infectious and tropical medicine." The focus is on research. The Institute combines high-tech laboratory studies on the biology of pathogens, their reservoir animals and vectors with immunology and host genetics, clinical studies, epidemiology and disease control in the endemic areas of tropical diseases. At present, research is focused on malaria, hemorrhagic fevers and tissue worm infections. For work with highly infectious pathogens such as Lassa and Ebola viruses, the institute is equipped with high-security laboratories of the highest biological security level (level 4).
