Demographic change poses major challenges for societies around the world. Politics and business in a growing number of countries must respond to the end of population growth and the ageing of their populations. Elsewhere, the aim is to slow down the still high rate of population growth through peaceful development and to provide employment for a large number of young people. As an independent think tank, the Berlin Institute for Population and Development deals with the causes and consequences of regional and global demographic changes. It sees its task as raising awareness of all issues relating to this change, promoting sustainable development, preparing scientific information for the political decision-making process, introducing new ideas into politics and developing concepts for solving demographic and development policy problems.
