Reliable mechanical testing of biomaterials and biological tissues

The Mach-1 by Biomomentum (Canada) is a modular material testing system designed for the precise mechanical characterization of soft and heterogeneous samples. It was specifically developed for the needs of life science research, where reliable quantification of tissues and biomaterials under controlled conditions is essential.

The Mach-1 is widely used to characterize biological tissues and tissue-engineering materials, such as cartilage, tendon, skin, brain, tumor tissue, as well as hydrogels, scaffolds, and vascular constructs. Mechanical properties can be measured reproducibly under physiologically relevant conditions (e.g., in fluid environments).

Key functions and applications:

  • High-resolution indentation and compression testing
  • Tensile testing as well as peel/adhesion tests using dedicated fixtures
  • Friction and tribology measurements, e.g., on cartilage surfaces
  • Multi-point mapping to assess tissue heterogeneity
  • Testing in fluids (e.g., PBS) and optional temperature-controlled baths
  • Precise control of displacement, force, speed, and relaxation protocols

Thanks to sensitive force measurement and stable drive technology, the system is also well suited for viscoelastic testing, stress relaxation, creep tests, cyclic loading, and failure analysis. The intuitive software supports standardized protocols and reproducible data output, including export options for advanced analysis.
