The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is one of the world's biggest philanthropic organizations and the fifth largest in the United States. It was greatly expanded and renamed from earlier versions of the foundation when the will of Robert Wood Johnson II was settled in 1972. He was a US Army General in World War II and son of the founder of the family business of Johnson & Johnson, who was named Robert Wood Johnson I.

The foundation is based in Princeton, New Jersey, U.S., and focuses on improving the health and health care of all Americans. It prioritizes its grants into four goal areas:

  • To ensure that all Americans have access to quality health care at reasonable cost
  • To improve the quality of care and support for people with chronic health conditions
  • To promote healthy communities and lifestyles
  • To reduce the personal, social and economic harm caused by substance abuse — tobacco, alcohol and illicit drugs

Its interest areas include:

  • expansion of health insurance coverage
  • improvement of health care quality
  • reduction of childhood obesity
  • improvement of public health
