The aim of the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences is to research cognitive abilities and brain processes in humans. Special emphasis is placed on the areas of language, music and action. The main areas of investigation are the perception of language, music, actions and the results of actions; the planning and production of language and actions as well as the interactions and common functional bases of production and perception in the various cognitive domains. A particular hallmark of the institute and at the same time the basis for its strategic research perspective is the close interlinking of content-related research and technological development. By merging the two renowned institutes into a large joint center under one roof, the Max Planck Society has created unique conditions for interdisciplinary collaborative research in the field of the behavioral and neurobiological foundations of human cognition in Leipzig. By pooling the resources of the two Max Planck Institutes and the synergy effects released by the merger, the new MPI is also setting a clear international benchmark in the field of cognitive and neuroscience.
