Zahoor Qasim



Dr. Syed Zahoor Qasim, born December 31, 1926, in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India, is one of India's leading marine scientists. In May 1981, Dr. Qasim was appointed Secretary to the Government of India in the Department of Environment (DOE) and in April 1982, he was appointed as the Secretary of the newly established Department of Ocean Development. He has been responsible for the acquisition of a second Oceanographic Research Vessel "Sagar Sampada" for the Indian Oceanographic research

Dr. Qasim led India's first excursion to Antarctica, and successfully organized and guided the other seven expeditions to the frozen continent from 1981 to 1988. He particularly worked on the biology of fisheries. He was awarded the Padma Shri for his contributions to Indian marine science.[1] [2]
