Faculty of Homeopathy

The Faculty of Homeopathy was incorporated by Act of Parliament in 1950. It was formed in 1944 from the old British Homeopathic Society (founded in 1843). Homeopathy is available on the National Health Service in Great Britain both from medical practices and at five NHS homeopathic hospitals.^[1]

The Faculty of Homeopathy Act 1950 confers upon the Faculty a regulatory duty. It initially applied just to the medical profession but it has subsequently been altered to include other professions, making the Faculty a multi-disciplinary organisation. The Faculty promotes the academic and scientific development of homeopathy and ensures standards in the education, training and practice of homeopathy by dentists, doctors, nurses, midwives, pharmacists, podiatrists, veterinary surgeons and other statutorily-registered healthcare professionals.

Membership

The Faculty has over 1,400 members throughout the world.

Training

Faculty-Accredited postgraduate courses in homeopathy are taught at five locations in the UK and at seven overseas. After specified training periods, students are eligible to sit the specialist examinations, which lead to the Faculty's qualifications: LFHom, MFHom (for doctors, nurses and pharmacists), VetMFHom (for veterinary surgeons) and DFHom (for dentists, pharmacists and podiatrists).

Publications

The Faculty publishes Homeopathy (formerly the British Homeopathic Journal -BHJ), a peer-review journal. This journal was first published in 1844, as the British Journal of Homoeopathy (BJH), which became the BHJ in 1911.

Simile is a regular Newsletter-type publication, for the service of members.

International

Apart from its overseas accreditation and teaching, the Faculty is an active member of the international homeopathic community and is one of the founding members of the European Committee for Homeopathy, which has developed a European Code of Professional Conduct and agreed Standards of training in homeopathic medicine in the European Union.
