Our brain evaluates food-dependent and hormonal signals from the body's periphery and ensures an even energy balance through feelings of hunger and satiety. This central nervous control is complex and not yet fully understood. The Max Planck Institute for Metabolism Research (formerly the Max Planck Institute for Neurological Research) aims to fully elucidate the neuronal control circuits. The researchers use multimodal and molecular imaging to describe both intact and defective regulation. If they succeed in gaining a fundamental understanding of the neuronal signaling pathways of metabolism in both healthy and diseased individuals, new molecular therapeutic approaches for diseases such as age-related diabetes and obesity can be developed in the long term.
