Palm-sized optics for highly sensitive NIR measurements of food and industrial products
Whether for process analysis, material inspection, or medical diagnostics, NIR measurements require high resolution and an excellent signal-to-noise ratio. Hamamatsu's FTIR Engine C16511-Near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy is widely used in industrial process control, material inspection, pharmaceutical analysis, and medical applications. These demanding applications require fast measurements, high spectral quality, and reliable results. The Hamamatsu FTIR Engine C16511-01 addresses these requirements by integrating a Fourier transform near infrared spectrometer into a compact module that can be incorporated into portable instruments, analytical systems, and inline monitoring equipment. Its design allows measurements to be performed directly at the point of use, reducing the need for sample transport and enabling real-time decision-making.
The FTIR engine covers a spectral response range from 1100 nm to 2500 nm and utilizes a highly sensitive InGaAs photodetector to acquire high-quality NIR spectra. Combined with a high signal-to-noise ratio, the system is well suited for absorbance measurements and diffuse reflection applications where small spectral differences must be detected reliably. High acquisition speeds of up to 275 spectra per second also make the device suitable for continuous monitoring and fast-changing processes.
At the heart of the system is a Michelson interferometer incorporating a beam splitter, fixed mirror, and movable mirror. The acquired interferometric signals are processed using Fourier transformation to generate precise spectral information. An integrated VCSEL semiconductor laser continuously monitors the movable mirror position, ensuring excellent wavelength accuracy and reproducibility. Ethernet connectivity (GigE Vision) enables straightforward integration into industrial, laboratory, and automation environments, while the supplied evaluation software supports data acquisition, visualization, and analysis.
Combining compact size, high measurement speed, broad NIR spectral coverage, and excellent spectral performance, the FTIR Engine C16511-01 is an effective solution for researchers, instrument developers, and industrial users seeking reliable real-time NIR analysis in a compact format.
