Virginia Institute for Forensic Science and Medicine



Founded in 1999 as a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, the Virginia Institute of Forensic Science and Medicine is a premier provider of education, training, and research. The Institute's purpose is to strengthen and improve the administration of justice by educating forensic scientists, forensic pathologists, law enforcement, legal professionals, medical professionals, and the public.

The Virginia Institute of Forensic Science and Medicine promotes justice, forged from the cooperative efficiencies and innovations of its medical examiner system, forensic science laboratories, and more than 200 world-renowned faculty. These faculty members lend their expertise as foremost practitioners of forensic science and medicine.

The Virginia Institute of Forensic Science and Medicine offers state-of-the-art post-graduate fellowships as preparation for careers in forensic disciplines. Through its forensic seminars, VIFSM enhances the knowledge and performance of individuals involved with violent crime and death investigation. The Institute has received national recognition as an innovator and leader in forensic education, training, and research.

In 2006, the Virginia Institute of Forensic Science and Medicine continued its successful reputation for excellence by accomplishing the following:

  • Presented with the 2006 Associations Advance America Award of Excellence in Public Policy in Washington, D.C.
  • Featured presenter at the 2006 Virginia Bioscience Conference.
  • Nominee for the 2006 Harvard University Innovations in American Government Award.
  • American film company, M2 Productions, produced feature length documentary about VIFSM's Fellowship Training program.
