Max Planck Institute for Medical Research



  The Max Planck Institute for Medical Research is a medical research institute located in Heidelberg, Germany. It was renamed from Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Medical Research in honour of the German physicist Max Planck . The institute is part of the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, a network of scientific research institutes mainly located in Germany.

Several Noble Prize laureates worked at the institute; Otto Meyerhof, Richard Kuhn, Fritz Lipmann, Walter Bothe, Severo Ochoa, Rudolf Mößbauer, André Lwoff, George Wald and Bert Sakmann .

Currently, the four departments making up the Institute are led, respectively by Ilme Schlichting (Molecular Biology), Bert Sakmann (Cell Physiology), Peter Seeburg (Neuronal Biology) and Winfried Denk (Biomedical Optics).
