The Journal for Healthcare Quality (JHQ) is the bi-monthly journal for the National Association for Healthcare Quality (NAHQ). More than 4,000 healthcare professionals participate in this association. Many members consider JHQ to be the number one member benefit. JHQ is a peer-reviewed journal based in Glenview, IL. All of the reviewers and authors are professionals in the field of healthcare quality.

History

JHQ was preceded by View and Review, the organizations journal, and was renamed in 1979 to the Journal of Quality Assurance (JQA). JQA was the official journal for the National Association of Quality Assurance Professionals (NAQAP). David Stumph, the NAQAP's executive director, was named editor of this quarterly publication. Stumph or members of the board wrote most of the articles for JQA. While a few articles appeared in JQA, most of the content was organizational news stories. JQA was more of a news magazine than a journal. "Making the transition from news magazine to journal was probably the biggest challenge," Stumph said. JQA became a bi-monthly publication in 1989 and by then the publication was officially a journal. In 1991, JQA was officially renamed JHQ when the association changed its name to NAHQ.

By 1993, the journal began offering opportunities for members to seek out additional certification in healthcare quality by offering continuing education (CE) credits. By reading the CE articles in the journal and completing a quiz, members earn credits to earn their CPHQ degree. In 2001, JHQ was awarded the ASAE Gold Circle Certificate of Achievement for a peer-reviewed journal. The following year, JHQ received an APEX Award of Excellence.

The 20th Anniversary for NAHQ also marked big changes for JHQ. In 2004, the journal was redesigned along with the NAHQ Web site. JHQ began publishing Web Exclusive articles for the redesigned NAHQ Web site. JHQ Web Exclusives exhibit more feature articles than the research-heavy articles that appear in JHQ. JHQ once again received an APEX Gold Award for Publication Excellence.
