Epedigree

A pedigree is a paper or electronic document (e-pedigree) that enables a single view of the product and order and is used for drug authentication. The pedigree goes with the drug and tracks the change of custody as the drug passes through the supply chain.

The Prescription Drug Marketing Act (PDMA), effective 1988, was enacted amid growing concerns of prescription drug diversion and counterfeting. Drug wholesalers that are not manfacturers or authorized distributors of a drug must provide a pedigree for every prescription drug they distribute. An example of a pedigree requires signatures verifying the name, address and date of all prior sales tracing back to the manufacturer.
