CHIMES Society



CHIMES Society is an international academic collaboration whose objective is to establish new stroke treatments.

CHIMES is a Singaporean non profit society founded by a group of Key Opinion Leaders in stroke, South-East Asia regional experts and clinicians interested in implementing a research project on Traditional Chinese Medicine Efficacy on Stroke recovery.

Current Research Project

CHIMES society has received a grant in 2007 from Singapore National Medical Research Council which has allowed the initiation of a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial in October 2007. The trial includes 1,100 patients and aims at measuring the efficacy of NeuroAid in reducing neurological deficit and improving functional outcome in patients with cerebral infarction. This trial is currently recruiting patients and details can be found at the ClinicalTrials.gov database from NIH under reference NCT00554723.

Key member biographies

Pr. Marie-Germaine BOUSSER, Hopital Lariboisiere, Paris, France Pr. Bousser is a professor of Neurology at Paris University and the Head of the Neurology department at Lariboisiere Hospital. She is a member of the Academy of Medicine. Professor Bousser is a member of the Council of the American Stroke association and a member of the Steering Committee on Venous Thrombosis. From 1992 to 2000, she was the foreign editor of Stroke. She has published about six hundred articles, most of them on headaches and cerebrovascular diseases.

Pr Geoffrey DONNAN, President of the World Stroke Organization Pr Geoffrey A. Donnan, MD is a Professor of Neurology, University of Melbourne and Director of the National Stroke Research Institute in Australia. He was a co-founder of the Australian Stroke Trial Network which conducts numerous stroke trials. He has authored over 300 peer reviewed journal publications, 51 books chapters and edited 15 proceedings of national meetings. He has also written and edited 3 books and had sat on the editorial boards of 7 international journals including Lancet, Neurology, stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases.

Dr Christopher CHEN, National University of Singapore , Singapore Dr Christopher Chen is a Senior Consultant Neurologist at the Department of Neurology, National Neuroscience Institute, Singapore General Hospital Campus and Adjunct Associate Professor at the Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Medecine, National University of Singapore. Currently he is Chair of the Chapter of Neurologists, College of Physicians, Singapore; member of the finance Subcommittee of the World Federation of Neurology and International Stroke Society Board of Directors. He has written more than 120 papers and 5 book chapters. He has taken part in several clinical studies such as DIAS, ONTARGET, ESPRIT, VITATIOPS, PASS II, GAIN, POST or IST.

Dr N.V. RAMANI, National Neuroscience Institute, TTS, Singapore Dr N V Ramani is a Senior Consultant at the National Neuroscience Institute of Singapore, Tan Tock Seng Hospital and Senior Lecturer with the Faculty of Medecine, National University of Singapore. He is presently clinical coordinator for stroke at the TTSH campus, chairman of the joint Cluster Stroke Disease Management program, Chairman of the National Stroke Registry Committee and Chairman of the Ministry of Health's Clinical Practice Guidelines for stroke and TIA. Dr Ramani's present research interests include clinical trial of medications in acute stroke, neuroepidemiology and neurosonology.

Dr Robert N GAN, National Neuroscience Institute, TTS, Singapore Dr Robert GAN is a Consultant Neurologist at the National Neuroscience Institute Tan Tock Seng of Singapore. He acted as principal Investigator in several trials such as PRoFESS. He is member of the American Heart Association Council on Stroke. As of today, he published more than 25 articles in specialized press.

Dr Bernard CHAN, National University Hospital, Singapore Dr Bernard Chan is a Consultant at the National University Hospital of Singapore. He is a member of Stroke Disease Management Group and Singapore Stroke Registry Committee. His main fields of investigation are Neurosonology in the evaluation of extraclinical and intraclinical artery disease, Thrombolytic therapy in acute ischaemic stroke and organization of stroke service. He has also taken part in PRoFESS, SAINT-II and ACTIVE Clinical trials.

Dr Shih Hui LIM, Singapore General Hospital, Singapore Dr Lim Shih Hui is Senior Consultant at the National Neuroscience Institute, Singapore General Hospital Campus and Clinical Lecturer at the National University of Singapore. He is the current President of the ASEAN Neurological Association and member of the Executive Committee of the Asian Epilepsy Academy. He is also president of the College of Physicians of Singapore. His current research projects include SKATE II Trial.

Dr Jose C. NAVARRO, University of Santo Tomas, Manila, Philippines Dr Jose Navarro is currently the Chairman of the Department of Neurology at the Jose R Reyes Memorial Medical Center and the head of the Intensive Care Unit and Acute Stroke Unit and Neurovascular Laboratory of the Philippine heart Center. He is currently second Vice-President of the Stroke Society of the Philippines and a member of the board of Directors for Asia, International Stroke Society. Dr Navarro is active in Stroke research in the Philippines and has participated in international stroke trials such as VITATOPS, CLAIR, ENOS and SAINT-2.

Dr Lawrence KS WONG, Prince of Wales Hospital, Hong Kong Pr Lawrence KS Wong is Professor and Chief of the Division of Neurology in the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Director of the Acute Stroke Unit at the Prince Wales Hospital in Hong Kong. He coordinates many international clinical trials in Asia, and has published more than 130 peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals and edited two medical books. His major research interests are epidemiology, intracranial atherosclerosis, neurosonology and clinical trials for treatment and prevention of stroke in Asians.

David Picard David Picard is the CEO of Moleac where he has focused on identifying medicines for stroke patients from TCM. David has played an important role in supporting the formation and operation CHIMES Society. David acts as the treasurer of CHIMES Society.

Prior Research Projects

Clinical studies were conducted in China from 1999 to 2001 and the results have been submitted for publication. Since publication is pending, further information will be provided here when the publication is released.
