  • Characterizing Environments: Recent Discoveries Enabled by Metagenomic Analysis with the Genome Sequencer FLX System

Metagenomics is the study of genomic content in a complex mixture of microorganisms. The two primary goals of this approach are to characterize the organisms present in a sample and identify what roles each organism has within a specific environment. Metagenomics samples are found nearly everywhere, including several microenvironments within the human body, soil samples, extreme environments such as deep mines, and the various layers within the ocean. Until recently, technical and economic constraints limited the depth of analysis necessary to obtain a representative picture of microbial and viral communities, their metabolic profiles, and their adaptation dynamics. Advancements in sequencing technologies, including the introduction of massively parallel pyrosequencing with the Genome Sequencer FLX System, have enabled a tremendous groundswell of research in the field of metagenomics. Dramatic improvements in throughput and the elimination of biased cloning steps have extended the field far beyond tradition more

  • Pathogen detection with VYOO(TM)

Sepsis is the most common cause of death in hospitalized patients worldwide. Inadequate antibiotic therapy represents an independent determinant of patients' mortality. Promptness of pathogen detection and the appliance of appropriate antibiotics are the cornerstones of management of severe bacterial infections. Furthermore, resistance to antibiotics is an increasing public health problem that can be attributed largely to their overuse. Thus, rapid diagnostic tests with both superior positive and negative predictive values over current techniques are sorely needed. more

  • Molecular diagnostic test applied to ascitic fluid

Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is a common and life-threatening complication of patients with ascites and cirrhosis of the liver. The mortality accounts for up to 30-50% and such patients die within several hours after infection. An early diagnosis and subsequent antibiotic therapy are prerequisites for the survival of the patients. The clinical standard for a diagnosis of SBP is the increased number of polymorphic neutrophilic cells in the ascites (> 250/l), independent of the results obtained with ascites cultures. An increased cell count is not detectable in all patients. Positive ascites cultures are typically found in 40-90% of all SBP cases. more
