The CytoViva® darkfield hyperspectral microscope was developed specifically to investigate nanoparticles, liposomes and viruses. It can be used to monitor nanotoxicity, the accumulation of nanoparticles in tissue, the targeted release of active APIs, among other things.

The patented darkfield optics enable label-free visualization of nano-objects even in complex media such as tissue and living cells.

The darkfield illumination is optimally aligned to direct an approximately 100 times greater light intensity into the focal plane of the microscope than with conventional darkfield optics. This results in a significantly higher contrast and an excellent signal-to-noise ratio.

A spectrograph, suitable for either the visible near infrared (VNIR) or short wave infrared (SWIR) wavelength range, detects the reflectance spectra of all image pixels and thus allows the quantitative spectral analysis and characterization (hyperspectral microscopy) of nano-objects at a spectral resolution of approximately 2 nm.

For long-term studies of living cells, this technique is an interesting, gentler alternative to fluorescence microscopy because the samples can be examined without the external impact of fluorescent dyes and at the same time produce largely unimpaired images. A further advantage is that there is no lengthy sample preparation step with fluorescence labels. However, simultaneous real-time imaging of fluorescent and non-fluorescent samples is also possible if required.
