Every characteristic of human anatomy and physiology is determined by biochemical reactions and catalyzed by enzymes. The enzymes are determined by our genetic make-up. The map is based on the glycolytic pathway followed by the the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) or Krebs cycle and the respiratory chain. Together these paths lead to the synthesis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the source of most of the energy required for all life, via ATP synthase. Many biosynthetic and breakdown pathways of metabolism such as those concerning carbohydrates, amino acids, and lipids are associated with this pathway and are differentiated by differences in color. Human metabolism is distinguished, where possible, by the use of black arrows.
