Scots Export Healthcare Innovation

26-Nov-2004

Scottish innovation is set to cause a stir at the world's largest medical forum, Medica 2004, which has started on 24th November 2004 in Dusseldorf, Germany.

A total of 13 Scottish companies have travelled across to display their wares and expertise to healthcare practitioners from 100 countries, but many more Scottish organisations will use the event for networking and deal making purposes. Overall, around 4,500 exhibitors are expected to attend.

Last year's event also attracted 135,000 delegates and stretches across a massive seventeen exhibition halls.

This year's formidable line-up of Scottish exhibitors is backed by Scottish Enterprise, Medical Devices in Scotland, and the Innovation Relay Centre.

Kevin Wilson, CEO of MDIS, said, "Medica is the major worldwide meeting for Medical Device Companies. It is a mecca for business to business activities and networking. Deals brokered at Medica will ensure that the Scottish Life Sciences community will play an active worldwide role in this important and growing sector."

Tayside-headquartered Anglo-Norwegian medical diagnostics specialists, Axis-Shield is just one company to be making the most of Medica by unveiling a ground-breaking new product which has been four years in development.

Afinion(TM) is an easy, point-of-care, diagnostic system which will allow GPs and clinical practitioners quick and easy analysis of blood samples taken by a simple finger-prick test on site.

This has immediate applications in the effective management of diabetes. It could also be used to reduce unnecessary prescriptions for antibiotics, measuring a substance which allows a physician to differentiate between the presence of bacterial and viral infections.

Svein Lien, Axis-Shield CEO said, "We enjoy a strong research base and have access to excellent clinical expertise here in Scotland but our marketplace is global. In order to benefit from the extensive research which goes into a product like Afinion(TM) shop windows like Medica are essential."
