In biotechnological laboratories, time is a valuable commodity, therefore, it is why it is so important that systems function reliably and safely and can be made operational in a hurry. This aspect is particularly important when it comes to the fermentor | bioreactor systems used to engineer new processes or optimize existing ones. This refers to processes involving growth studies with microbial cultures or mammalian, insect and plant cells and to cultures with high cell densities or when culture media combinations are being created or optimized.
It was with this in mind that Sartorius Stedim Biotech engineered a new generation of fermentor | bioreactor systems. The BIOSTAT® Qplus was specifically designed for parallel operation with high throughput capacities. Process engineering and optimization and scale-up and scale-down experiments can be carried out quickly because the system allows simple measurement and control of individual process parameters. Examples include strain and cell-line characterization, but also quality control and production process control. A multitude of process parameters can be evaluated at an accelerated pace thanks to the system’s high-volume sample throughput. Optimal process conditions can be identified and processes better understood. Ultimately, laboratory staff will have more time to devote to real task of process engineering.
In the Fast Track
The system consists of several modules including a supply tower, cultivation vessel, control system and MFCS/DA SCADA software for enhanced visualization, data acquisition and for preparing trend displays.
The BIOSTAT® Qplus is supplied with cultivation vessels of 0.5 and/or 1 liter capacities. The newly developed control system is especially interesting because it offers innumerable options relating to biotechnological serial tests in combination with small-volume cultivation vessels. These features give the BIOSTAT® Qplus the capability to control up to twelve culture vessels fully independently and with minimal of manual operation. Using the 3-fold vessel | supply tower extension kit, a 3-fold, 6-fold, or 9-fold fermentor | bioreactor system can be easily extended up to a 12-fold system without any expensive software upgrades. Thanks to the space saving integrated tower design, a 12-fold system with 0.5-liter cultivation vessels consumes less than 2.50 meters (approx. 8 ft.) of bench space.
The BIOSTAT® Qplus developers took special consideration to ensure that the system allows the analyst get on track fast. Application-driven, preconfigured packages for microbial and cell cultures among others give users everything they need get started immediately.
Additionally, no special laboratory facilities are required – the ideal prerequisite for getting off to a fast-paced start in optimizing your biotechnological processes.
