With the introduction of the BIOSTAT® CultiBag RM, Sartorius Stedim Biotech has set yet another milestone in extending its product array featuring disposable technologies.
The BIOSTAT® CultiBag RM consists of a rocker that operates in a special rocking mode, a BIOSTAT® control system and disposable bags (CultiBag RM). This rocking motion is particularly suitable for shear-sensitive cells. Disposable bags reduce validation costs, eliminate cleaning and sterilization, and protect cells from shearing forces. For process optimization, the rocker is combined with the BIOSTAT® control system for mixing with low shear. The BIOSTAT® control system features an easy-to-operate and context-sensitive touch screen panel, along with integrated measurement and control hardware, pumps, temperature, gassing systems as well as pH and DO feedback control.
The CultiBag RM is available with scalable working volumes from 0.15 L to 100 L and is ideal for:
- Cultivation of mammalian, plant, insect and other microbial cells
- Shear-sensitive cells or anaerobic bacteria
- Transition from shake or tissue culture flasks

Fast Use
Users are provided with everything needed to get started immediately: application-driven, pre-configured packages for basic, optical and perfusion. The Basic Package does not have a BIOSTAT® control use, as it is used primarily for simple and easy cultivation in which recording of the process data is not necessary. In addition to featuring a rocker, the Optical Package also includes a control system and two integrated peristaltic pumps. This package is designed for batch and fed-batch processes. The Perfusion Package consists of a rocker, a control system with four integrated peristaltic pumps, and is ideal for perfusion control. Both the Optical and the Perfusion Packages have additional SCADA MFCS/DA software for data collection and monitoring.
The BIOSTAT® CultiBag RM is the first generation of disposable bioreactors of the strategic alliance between Wave Biotech AG, Switzerland, and Sartorius Stedim Biotech, and incorporates novel technologies, such as disposable sensors for pH and dissolved oxygen, disposable connectors and Sartorius Stedim Biotech control technologies.
