Reference Manager - a Software for scientific knowledge management for research, education and development!
|
Why digital knowledge management at all?
Much of today’s research is done online or on CD-ROM. There is a wide range of scientific databases from different database providers. Information extracted from these databases has to be revised to prevent one from multiple inquests and to keep one´s technical literature up-to-date and available. Continuous use of a bibliographic management tool like Reference Manager eases work with information search as well as scientific information.
How can Reference Manager help you?
Reference Manager integrates three functions in one program: Searching and importing literature in your own reference library, organising bibliographic references and creating instant bibliographies in a wide range of delivered output styles.
How does Reference Manager work in detail?
1. Searching and importing literature
Reference Manager offers you four options to import data:
- Using a “connection file”: E.g. you can connect to and search online databases like PubMed/Medline directly within Reference Manager and import your search results in one-click in your own reference library
- Using „direct export“: You can search databases from different supplieres by using the „Direct Export“-Button and import you search results in your own reference library.
- By using an import filter which is integrated in Reference Manager. The research is also done in an online database. The research result will be stored in a .txt-file and can be imported by using an integrated import filter with one click. Reference Manager provides hundreds of such preconfigured import filters.
- By manual input

2. Storing and organising references
Reference Manager manages different document types such as journal articles, books, electronic sources, dissertations, videography etc. There are also fields where information such as keywords, abstracts, personal comments can be stored. Stored data can also be linked to external sources or external documents. Five fields are provided to link to sources from the internet, to pdf-documents or other data types. Reference Manager is optimally qualified to build a bibliographic database with full-text search feature. The database itself is built in tabular form. Its layout and its view of databases can be modified according to individual preferences. The number and position of shown table fields are also be changed however the user wants. The Reference Manager database supports full-text search. Relevant references can be found quickly over multiple database fields (e.g.: author, keywords etc.) by using self-defined queries. The usage of the boolean operators like AND, OR and NOT allow sophisticated search strategies which can be stored and reused.
3. Citing and generating bibliographies in publications
Reference Manager especially simplifies publishing. Within your word processing software one can research one´s own database and can also be directly inserted in the current document. While writing a paper, citations and bibliography will be automatically formatted according to the author´s guideline. Reference Manager includes more than 1000 such guidelines of scientific journals, publishers and societies.

Supplementary software for bibliographic management
Scientific knowledge management software EndNote: The second bibliographic management software besides Reference Manager from Thomson ResearchSoft. Data visualization software RefViz: RefViz provides a unique visual analysis of literature references. So you can pinpoint the ones most relevant to your current project without having to read hundreds of abstracts, them import them straight into Reference Manager or EndNote.
