Macrogen and Applied Biosystems Partner on Korean FDA Toxicogenomics Study

12 Aug 2005 - Macrogen Inc. and Applied Biosystems Group, an Applera Corporation business, announced that Macrogen will provide gene expression analysis services using the Applied Biosystems Expression Array System to the National Institute of Toxicological Research (NITR) under the Korean Food and Drug Administration (KFDA).
 
NITR and its five selected research centers in Korea will begin testing the efficacy of applying gene expression signatures identified by the Applied Biosystems Human Genome Survey Microarray and Expression Array System for developing predictive food and drug evaluation measurement systems. This research program includes the development of predictive gene signatures and overall toxicology evaluation technology for food and drugs, including traditional herbal medicines, by employing human, mouse, and rat DNA microarray-based toxicogenomics.
 
DNA microarray technology enables identification of gene expression differences from various biological specimens. The goal is to identify variations that may be associated with different disease states or responses to therapy.
 
NITR is concurrently working on various other projects such as a genomic and proteomic expression database for unidentified toxic substances, herbal medicines, and biotechnological product evaluation technology. The outcomes from these research efforts will be used as scientific landmarks for standardizing food and drug safety measurements and for establishing future evaluation criteria.
