There are two other Faculties of Dental Surgery in the UK, one based at The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, the other a part of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow
In 2006 an agreement to merge the Faculty of Dental Surgery with the Faculty of General Dental Practice of the same college was agreed by the councils of both faculties, but when the proposal was put to the faculty's members and fellows it was overwhelmingly rejected.
The faculty can grant Postgraduate qualifications to dentists, including the Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (MFDS) (currently being phased out), the Diploma of Membership of the Joint Dental Faculties at The Royal College of Surgeons of England (MJDF) (currently being phased in), the Diploma in Dental Public Health, Diploma in Special Care Dentistry, the Membership in Restorative Dentistry and the Membership in Surgical Dentistry.
