European Molecular Biology Organization

The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) promotes bioscience in Europe through programmes and activities. In 2007, there were 1,200 elected members in Europe and over 70 associate members globally.

The creation of a European organization for cooperation in molecular biology was proposed by leading European scientists in 1963. One year later, the EMBO was officially founded. The organization's secretariat is based in Heidelberg, Germany.

The Executive Secretary of EMBO is Professor Hermann Bujard.

Three scientific journals, The EMBO Journal, EMBO Reports and Molecular Systems Biology are published by Nature Publishing Group on behalf of the EMBO.
