Barton K. Hawkins (born 1961) instigated several key advances in biochemistry and biophysics, most notably his invention of the intramolecular kinetic isotope effect.
This effect provides for much finer resolution of enzymatic reaction mechanism than previously possible, as pre-catalytic rate limiting events such as binding and so forth become irrelevant.
