Xylulose ist eine Ketopentose, also ein Monosaccharid mit fünf Kohlenstoffatomen (daher Pentose) und einer Ketogruppe am C₂-Atom (daher Ketose).

Das Molekül kommt in Form des Xylulose-5-Phosphates als Zwischenprodukt im Pentosephosphat-Zyklus vor.
