Larvae of Xenopus laevis (stage 39, after hatching) were reared in the 0.95-L (10-cm height; 9.5-cm diameter) containers with all combinations of white, grey, and black color of bottom and walls (side background). The containers were kept in a closed box at 12-hours illumination per day. After two months (stage 55), the number of pigment cells was counted on lateral side of larval body. Both bottom and side background had a significant effect on number of dermal melanophores.
