After years of scientific uncertainty and speculation, researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill show exactly how trees help create one of society's predominant environmental and health concerns: air pollution. It has long been known that trees produce and emit isoprene, an abun more
The overuse of nitrogen fertilizers in agriculture can wreak havoc on waterways, health and the environment. An international team of scientists aims to lessen the reliance on these fertilizers by helping beans and similar plants boost their nitrogen production, even in areas with traditionally poor more
Driven by aggressive biofuel mandates, rapid growth will cause great strain on biomass by 2030, according to Lux Research. Using today’s technologies, an area the size of Russia would need to be cultivated to replace all of petroleum use for chemicals and fuels – feedstock innovation will be needed more
Metagenomics is the study of genomic content in a complex mixture of microorganisms. The two primary goals of this approach are to characterize the organisms present in a sample and identify what roles each organism has within a specific environment. Metagenomics samples are found nearly everywhere, including several microenvironments within the human body, soil samples, extreme environments such as deep mines, and the various layers within the ocean. Until recently, technical and economic constraints limited the depth of analysis necessary to obtain a representative picture of microbial and viral communities, their metabolic profiles, and their adaptation dynamics. Advancements in sequencing technologies, including the introduction of massively parallel pyrosequencing with the Genome Sequencer FLX System, have enabled a tremendous groundswell of research in the field of metagenomics. Dramatic improvements in throughput and the elimination of biased cloning steps have extended the field far beyond tradition more
In our efforts to measure the expression levels of the thyroid hormone receptor ß2 in small areas of mouse brain, we encountered primer-dimer problems when using SYBR Green I assays. With the Universal ProbeLibrary and the LightCycler® 2.0 Instrument we were able to solve the primer-dimer problem, increase PCR efficiency, and continue our investigations. more
As drugs applied to organisms are metabolized via the liver, hepatocytes represent a useful and common study model. Primary hepatocytes are widely used to evaluate the toxic effects of drugs and xenobiotics. A variety of metabolic parameters have been described to analyze the functionality of hepatocytes. Via those parameters, the toxic effect of substances can easily be quantified. One drawback of primary hepatocyte culture is the short duration of survival and the high sensibility of the cells. Therefore, every step towards a more gentle method of isolating the cells increases cell number and vitality and thus improves the outcome of biomedical research applications more
Summary The influence of some abiotic variables (pH, dry weight, organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous) on culturable yeast diversity in two distinct, but adjacent Alpine glaciers (glacier du Géant, France, and Miage glacier, Italy) was investigated. In all, 682 yeast strains were isolated an more
Abstract The production of cellulase using solid‐state fermentation of rice straw by the mutant strain Hypocrea koningii RSC1 was studied. Optimization of culture conditions, such as the nitrogen source, pH, and temperature, resulted in a maximum filter paper cellulase activity of 44.15 U g−1 s more
ABSTRACT Rise in body temperature is a life‐threatening consequence of 3,4‐methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, ecstasy) abuse. We evaluated the impact of hyperthermia on the cytotoxicity of combinations of MDMA and three other amphetamines, often co‐ingested. For this, Hep G2 cells were exposed more
