  • Cancer drug prevents build-up of toxic brain protein

Researchers at Georgetown University Medical Center have used tiny doses of a leukemia drug to halt accumulation of toxic proteins linked to Parkinson's disease in the brains of mice. This finding provides the basis to plan a clinical trial in humans to study the effects. They say their study, publi more

  • High leukemia treatment costs may be harming patients

The increasing cost of treatments for chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) in the United States has reached unsustainably high levels and may be leaving many patients under- or untreated because they cannot afford care, according to a Blood Forum article supported by nearly 120 CML experts from more than more

  • Mitochondrial metabolic regulator SIRT4 guards against DNA damage

Healthy cells don't just happen. As they grow and divide, they need checks and balances to ensure they function properly while adapting to changing conditions around them. Researchers studying a set of proteins that regulate physiology, caloric restriction and aging have discovered another important more

  • Acquired Copy Number Alterations in Adult Acute Myeloid Leukemia Genomes

To complement cytogenetic studies and to identify genes altered in AML genomes, Walter and co-workers performed a genome-wide copy number analysis with paired normal and tumor DNA obtained from 86 adult subjects with de novo AML using 1.85 million feature SNP arrays. A total of 201 somatic CNAs were found in the 86 AML genomes (mean, 2.34 CNAs per genome), with FAB-System M6 and M7 genomes containing the most changes (10-29 CNAs per genome). According to the authors' conclusions, the use of an unbiased high-resolution genomic screen identified many genes not previously implicated in AML that may be relevant for pathogenesis, along with many known oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes. Despite the ability of next-generation sequencing platforms to accurately identify amplifications, deletions, and translocations, a multiplatform approach (traditional cytogenetics, FISH, SNP array, array CGH, and targeted gene resequencing) will continue to be the most practical approach to studying AML genomes at most institut more

  • miRNA Extraction and Profiling on FFPE Samples

RNA silencing is a mechanism of gene regulation whereby small double-stranded RNAs (dsRNAs) of 21-18 nucleotides in length cause mRNA degradation, mRNA translation, or chromatin modification. In the past years, more than 500 novel genes have been identified in animals and plants encoding small transcripts that can form small dsRNA hairpin structures. From these hairpin precursors, small 22-nt RNAs - so called microRNAs (miRNA) - are excised by dsRNA-specific endonucleases. The miRNAs are then integrated in ribonucleoprotein particles (RNPs). Most miRNAs in animals act by binding to partially complementary regions of the 3' untranslated region of their target mRNA, thereby blocking translation. more

  • Amplicon Sequencing with the GS FLX Titanium Series: High Sensitivity Targeted Resequencing

Amplicon sequencing with the Genome Sequencer FLX System has already enabled a wide variety of scientific discoveries, particularly in clinical research. The introduction of the GS FLX Titanium Chemistry and the release of the associated amplicon sequencing protocols will continue to expand applications, as more and longer amplicons increase the depth of analysis for detecting rare variants and improve coverage of gene loci more
