Here's a good reason to pay attention in math class. Nature Communications has published a paper from Ottawa researchers today, outlining how advanced mathematical modelling can be used in the fight against cancer. The technique predicts how different treatments and genetic modifications might allow more
Listeriosis is rare in humans. However, since they can cause severe illness such as meningitis and miscarriage, foods contaminated with high quantities of listeria - typically smoked or gravad fish, soft and semi-soft cheese made from raw milk - are especially problematic. In contrast, food contamin more
Developing new vaccines to protect against diseases that plague humans is fraught with numerous challenges—one being that microbes tend to vary how they look on the surface to avoid being identified and destroyed by the immune system. However, researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) have more
Sepsis is the most common cause of death in hospitalized patients worldwide. Inadequate antibiotic therapy represents an independent determinant of patients' mortality. Promptness of pathogen detection and the appliance of appropriate antibiotics are the cornerstones of management of severe bacterial infections. Furthermore, resistance to antibiotics is an increasing public health problem that can be attributed largely to their overuse. Thus, rapid diagnostic tests with both superior positive and negative predictive values over current techniques are sorely needed. more
As demonstrated here, there are a broad range of HPLC applications used in development, production, validation and release of protein therapeutics for human use. Some of the applications mentioned above are mandatory when submitting a new biopharmaceutical to approval at the regulatory agencies. The introduction of the first so-called biosimilars in Europe further increased the demand for highly efficient analysis methods. The continuous development of new stationary phases for the common modes of biochromatography, such as size exclusion, ion exchange and hydrophilic interaction chromatography support biochemists in increasing lab productivity and establishing high-throughput HPLC analysis not only for small molecules but also for large biopolymers more
Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is a common and life-threatening complication of patients with ascites and cirrhosis of the liver. The mortality accounts for up to 30-50% and such patients die within several hours after infection. An early diagnosis and subsequent antibiotic therapy are prerequisites for the survival of the patients. The clinical standard for a diagnosis of SBP is the increased number of polymorphic neutrophilic cells in the ascites (> 250/l), independent of the results obtained with ascites cultures. An increased cell count is not detectable in all patients. Positive ascites cultures are typically found in 40-90% of all SBP cases. more
Extracellular attaching and effacing (A/E) pathogens including pathogenic E. coli colonize the host gut causing diarrhea and inflammation. Although much is known regarding the pathogenesis of A/E bacteria, there remains an incomplete understanding of host immune responses to these microbes. Natura more

BMI View: Uganda's pharmaceutical market is typical of developing markets: defined by an absence of a clear regulatory framework, a dependence upon drug imports and low healthcare expenditure per capita. Economic growth will aid the development of Uganda's pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors as af more
There are an estimated 33.3 million people living with HIV (the virus which causes AIDS) worldwide and approximately 2.6 million people are newly-infected each year. While the Asian and African regions account for more than 90% of the HIV-infected population (with the highest number in Sub-Saharan A more
