Genetic resistance to antibiotics is not the only trick bacteria use to resist eradication– they also have a second defence strategy known as persistence that can kick in. Researchers reporting in the Journal of Medical Microbiology have now demonstrated for the first time that interplay occurs betw more

Sepsis is the most common cause of death in hospitalized patients worldwide. Inadequate antibiotic therapy represents an independent determinant of patients' mortality. Promptness of pathogen detection and the appliance of appropriate antibiotics are the cornerstones of management of severe bacterial infections. Furthermore, resistance to antibiotics is an increasing public health problem that can be attributed largely to their overuse. Thus, rapid diagnostic tests with both superior positive and negative predictive values over current techniques are sorely needed. more
In his novel "Perfume - the Story of a Murderer", Patrick Süskind managed to put the power of odors into words better than anyone before him. It may be a fascinating idea, but no one will ever be able to create the perfect fragrance that makes a person irresistibly attractive. In the animal world, on the other hand, olfactory signals are an essential element of social communication. Yet we are only just beginning to understand the complexities and functional differences of the sense of smell in mammals. Professor Marc Spehr is leading the Department of Chemosensation at RWTH Aachen University since 2009, where he is conducting research on the neuronal mechanisms of olfactory perception and signal processing using the mouse model. In his experiments, he and his team are trying to find out how substances for social interaction are perceived and how this perception generates a specific type of behavior more
Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is a common and life-threatening complication of patients with ascites and cirrhosis of the liver. The mortality accounts for up to 30-50% and such patients die within several hours after infection. An early diagnosis and subsequent antibiotic therapy are prerequisites for the survival of the patients. The clinical standard for a diagnosis of SBP is the increased number of polymorphic neutrophilic cells in the ascites (> 250/l), independent of the results obtained with ascites cultures. An increased cell count is not detectable in all patients. Positive ascites cultures are typically found in 40-90% of all SBP cases. more
by Sae Jin Oh, Ji Hyung Kim, Doo Hyun Chung Nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain (NOD) 2 is a cytosolic protein that plays a defensive role in bacterial infection by sensing peptidoglycans. C5a, which has harmful effects in sepsis, interacts with innate proteins. However, whether NOD2 regula more
